First review: The Self-Driven Child




 

I just began The Self-Driven Child by Willian Stixrud and Ned Johnson. 


For the introduction, so much makes sense for parents and teachers. How do we (parents and teachers) allow our children/students to have a sense of control and increase self-motivation? 

The false assumptions they list are so prevalent in schools with families that expect straight A's, high involvement, and resume building. "Our role is to teach them to think and act independently."

And think most parents believe this but how many think they, the parents, have to control the thinking?

How can education use this train of thought to lead students to make good choices and not need everything decided for them?

How can teachers allow for choice and self-motivation to occur in their classroom without feeling like it extra work?

I look forward to reading and finding solutions. That is a way to rework education, so students willingly create paths to their futures.
